Taper Split
What is the sword from S. China Sea area that splits into two swords?
1. Made of bronze (?)
2. short but has a D style hand guard - a simple bent bar, shaped but not fancy.
3. the sword is split down the middle making two swords carried together in one sheath. I suppose it could be used as a single weapon but, single or double, it's a stabbing weapon - no sharpened edges.
4. Split, the blades look triangular tapering to a triangular point.
5. Grip and guard are also split making two identical looking swords. The one I saw, both sides fit together extremely smoothly; so well that I didn't notice that they could separate until I handled them for a few moments.
6. I was told it was commonly used by pirates (or other sailors) and that the S. China Sea bottom is likely littered with them.
Wish I knew what it is called and more about it. I first saw one over 25 years ago at a reputable antique dealer.
yes, i've seen those swords before in china. sorry i dont know the name but this is the sword that i saw: it's a long sword, and it is like " a twin" .. one on the left and one one the right if you combine the two sides it fits perfectly into " ONE " single sword, one round hand grip. and you can use it as "two" separate swords if you wish, as if it was sliced exactly from the middle , from the "blade area" all the way down to the panel....
the one that i saw is NOT a stabbing weapon, but a long sword, like a taichi style sword...with a colored "silk ribbon" at the bottom of the grip..
you can still get those swords if you travel to s.china to places where they sell souvenirs....
